LONG ROAD HOME / Richard Flynn

An estranged father and his drug-addicted son. A long car journey from London to Glasgow to face their demons.

It’s been a tough year for NATHAN BAIRD. A downward spiral of drinks, drugs and depression following a personal tragedy has culminated in his admittance to rehab. But, finally, things are looking up – he’s just discovered he’s being released. There’s only one problem – his release is on condition that his parents take legal responsibility. And Nathan hasn’t spoken to his father, JACK, in eight long years.

Long Road Home charts the journey of these two estranged men – the ups and downs, the jokes and jibes and fights – as they confront their pasts and their own strained relationship.

With humour and heartbreak, Long Road Home examines the often-difficult father-son relationship – in this case, one based in the stoic, taciturn masculinity of the west coast of Scotland. Bruised prides and delicate egos are forced to collide in the confined space of a beat-up old Vauxhall Astra and the miserable strip-lighting of motorway service stations. Can the two men make amends and start their relationship anew?
